VERY IMPORTANT LATE BREAKING NEWS INFORMATION
THE LATEST BUILDING REGULATIONS ON FIRE SAFETY AND THE REASON WHY WE HAVE DECIDED TO WITHDRAW OUR DIY SPRAY FOAM KIT RANGE FROM THE UK MARKET
With immediate effect we are withdrawing our complete range of DIY spray foam kits from sale due to changes in fire safety under the latest Building Regulations.
We cite and reference the latest and now currently in force Building Regulations Approved Document B for Fire Safety (includes Parts B1 to B5) and especially Part B2 internal fire spread linings of Approved Document B. B2 here is a document reference area in Approved Document B and does not mean B2 the fire rating which is not mentioned or referenced.
We briefly cover here building material fire ratings and standards. Firstly, a B2 fire rating (a German inspired fire standard classification) and British Standard Class 1 fire rating are not strictly comparable as the testing method to get each classification is different. The UK Building Regulations make clear that in the final analysis only National British Standard test methods are acceptable if direct equivalence (comparability) cannot be shown although allowance is made when this is the case, e.g. Class 1 fire rating is apparently equivalent to European Class C-s3, d2 fire rating. B2 is not directly equivalent to Class 1 because of (as previously mentioned) fundamental differences in testing methods.
Of importance and note is that the UK Building Regulations now define 'internal linings' as materials or products (e.g. spray foam) used in lining any partition, wall, ceiling or internal structure (e.g. under the roof). Therefore, our understanding is that spraying foam under the roof or in a partition, or against a wall etc is defined as a 'lining' as the foam is a material/product sprayed to an internal structure.
Section 7 of Document B2 (page 59 in latest release of Approved Document B) essentially says that a lining must meet Class 1 (meets the requirements of BS476 part 7) in residential accommodation if the area is greater than 4 m2. Stricter requirements are in place for publically shared areas such as communal areas such as stairways where Class O fire rating must be achieved.
This means that the spray foam as a lining material greater than 4 m2 must be Class 1 fire rated as a minimum standard under Building Regulations Approved Document B, part B2 and that a lesser fire standard or a standard that is not strictly equivalent to Class 1 will therefore not meet the latest UK Building Regulations. B2 is not strictly comparable to Class 1 as the testing methodology is different.
Our range of spray foam kits are currently fire rated at B2 (B2 probably meets the requirements of BS 476 part 20 but probably not the requirements of part 7 for a Class 1 material but definitely not part 6 for a Class O fire rating) and therefore cannot be used for areas greater than 4 m2 for compliance with Building Regulations.
We therefore must advise customers of this if they are thinking of using spray foam kits (areas greater than 4 m2) that our kits will probably not meet the latest UK Building Regulations. Our understanding is that current UK Building Regulations effectively prevents the responsible sale of spray foam kits that are capable of spraying areas greater than 4 m2 with a B2 fire rated product if the product is used as a 'lining' as so defined under Building Regulations.
As an ISO 9001 accredited, Fairtrades registered and responsible UK based company, DIY Spray Foam Kits have therefore reluctantly decided to withdraw our complete range of spray foam kits from the UK market and whilst we were offering the most competitive UK prices for our kit range we are no longer feel it is responsible to offer our kits for sale since we are aware that the majority of our kit applications are used in buildings for areas greater than 4 m2.
The new Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act came into force on the 6 April 2008. It is simply not worth the risk for any person/builder/installer/developer/company etc to install any lining less than Class 1 (above 4 m2) particularly as there are now very severe penalties in law for corporate manslaughter in the event of non compliance with fire safety. We as a company have no wish to put anyone in that position by buying products in ignorance of fire safety requirements. Effectively, all linings will have to be fire rated Class 1 or O for public areas.
However, we have taken steps to now offer a UK wide contracting service for both Class 1 and O fire rated spray foam which does meet Building Regulations for fire safety and in many cases we can actually offer the customer a cost saving over spray foam kits in any event particularly for full roof applications.
Please call 0800 019 6064 for a prompt service and lowest competitively priced, professionally installed, Class 1 and O spray foam systems that meets the requirements of current UK Building Regulations.

Type of Foam to order: 'quick cure' vs 'slow rise'
Please take care to choose the type of spray foam you require. Choose 'quick cure' foam for most applications where you can see the surface you are spraying and control the amount of foam applied. Choose 'slow rise' foam where you are injecting the foam blind and cannot see the depth of foam created. Quick cure foam sets within minutes and is ideal for fast spray applications where the depth is controlled. Slow rise is more suited to ‘blind’ applications where you require the foam to spread out before curing, e.g. in cavities and voids, and where the foam is will adopt the shape of the mold. Do not be tempted to use quick cure in ‘blind’ situations since quick cure foam will expand without control or restraint and will push materials apart if prevented from expanding. Slow rise foam will flow into areas and not 'push' as it expands.
